At Broughton Manor Preparatory School, we reflect British values in everything we do. 

The Department for Education states that there is a need to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Thus, ensuring that young people understand the importance of respect and leave school fully prepared for life in modern Britain.

We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into caring, democratic, responsible, and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the world. We encourage our children to be creative, unique, open-minded, and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and of others in our school, our local community, and the wider world.

Democracy

Democracy is part of everyday life at Broughton Manor. Children are always listened to by adults, and they are taught to listen carefully to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their voice and opinions heard and valued. Pupils in our Preparatory Department have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council, who work together to improve the school and influence school policy, through the Charity Committee, pupil questionnaires, class, and year group discussions and PSHE debates.

The Rule of Law

At Broughton Manor, we actively promote and teach our children about the rules of law that govern the class, the school or country. The importance of these laws is consistently reinforced. Pupils are taught the reasons behind laws, and the values that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and the Fire Service help reinforce this message. 

Children are taught the difference between right and wrong, and the importance of honesty, forgiveness and reparation through our class and school rules. They are taught how to manage their own behaviour and take responsibility for their actions. We help our pupils to understand the connection between actions and consequences.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are encouraged to be independent learners, to make their own choices, within a safe and supportive environment. Developing their self-esteem and self-confidence is imperative and this is done in an environment where tolerance and acceptance are equally as important.

Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their individual rights and are taught how to use these to best effect, alongside the responsibilities that go with these rights.

Pupils are actively encouraged to make choices within the school, ranging from their participation in extra-curricular activities to their school lunch. They are encouraged to become good and valued citizens.

Mutual Respect

We are proud of our family feel at Broughton Manor and therefore, mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviour influences their own rights and those of others. All members of our school community treat each other with respect as we actively encourage children to apply this in their daily lives.

Pupils are regularly involved in activities in assemblies and PSHE lessons, where they are helped to understand why mutual respect is vitally important.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

At Broughton Manor, we are a proudly diverse school and an inclusive community with children from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.  Each individual is respected and valued equally and we actively promote our children’s understanding of different faiths and beliefs through the religious and cultural appreciation that forms part of the school curriculum. We participate in events and celebrations to broaden pupils’ experiences and awareness of others and have regular celebrations of different faiths such as Diwali, Christingle and Easter. Parents and visitors come into school to share their heritage and beliefs, and children visit places of worship including churches, temples and mosques.

Through this, our children have a full understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society. Our active support of charities both in Britain and overseas develops our children’s understanding of and respect for the differences and inequalities in the world.
